The idea belongs to Hero of Alexandria, a Greek engineer, who lived in the first century A.D. It was never used until the XVII century. For example, in 1792 the system was built in Vienne in order to fight the fire. An observer was monitoring the city from the top of the 50-meter bell tower of St. Stephen’s Cathedral. If he saw a fire, he sent a metal cartridge down with a message about where the firefighters are needed. It was a local airmail service within one building.
By the end of XIX century hundreds of kilometers of pneumatic tubes entangled London, Paris, New York, Rio de Janeiro and many other cities. It was used in Prague until 2002, when it was damaged by flood.
