Pneumatic tube transport: faster than wind

delivery faster than wind

What do you know about pneumatic tube transport? Suddenly I’ve understood that I know almost nothing about it. I remember, that it was public transport in Futurama, and it was used to transfer money safely in some American movie. Let’s dig a little as it seems to be a very interesting subject to explore.

Pneumatic tubes system is a system that propel cylindrical containers through networks of tubes by compressed air or by partial vacuum. The idea belongs to Hero of Alexandria, a Greek engineer, who lived in the first century A.D. It was never used until the XVII century. For example, in 1792 the system was built in Vienne in order to fight the fire. An observer was monitoring the city from the top of the 50-meter bell tower of St. Stephen’s Cathedral. If he saw a fire, he sent a metal cartridge down with a message about where the firefighters are needed. It was a local airmail service within one building.

By the end of XIX century hundreds of kilometers of pneumatic tubes entangled London, Paris, New York, Rio de Janeiro and many other cities. It was used in Prague until 2002, when it was damaged by flood.

Pneumatic tubes are still used in banks to send documents and money, libraries, in hospitals to send quickly case histories, and even drugs, samples, and in supermarkets.

Pneumatic mail systems allow you to:

  • ensure the reliability and security of sending documents;
  • optimize the work of employees due to the more rapid transmission of documents;
  • provide modern customer service;
  • create more comfortable conditions for customer service;
  • improve the working conditions of staff.
